In the last two years many crossovers have appeared in the Indian automobile market following the success of the Ford EcoSport. Toyota Kirloskar Motors Private Limited (TKM) has launched the Etios cross in the month of May 2014 which was unveiled earlier during the 2014 Indian auto expo.
The Etios Cross comes in 4 variants, two each in petrol and diesel priced Rupees 5.95 to 7.44 lakh. The Etios Cross 1.5G and 1.5V are the base and the top petrol variants and 1.4GD and 1.4VD are the base and the top diesel variants. The car comes in beautiful colours of ultramarine blue, celestial black, classic grey, vermilion red, symphony silver, harmony beige, white and inferno orange.
The Toyota’s QDR (Quality, Durability and Reliability) principle can be seen in the design of this crossover. Externally the Etios Cross is similar to the Etios Liva. The cosmetic touch ups on the body like the silver bull bar and the skid plate along with the black bumper gives the Cross a better look. Other features on the body include an aggressive grille, extended headlamp clusters, large fog lamps on the front bumper, black cladding on all the three sides with silver skirting, a rear spoiler and the carving of the name on the claddings. An additional attraction will be the silver coloured roof rails which can carry loads up to 55 kg.
The cabin of the Etios Cross is spacious with a black theme for the dash. A centrally placed instrument panel and a 2 DIN music system with AM/FM radio, CD/MP3 players and auxiliary and USB ports, fabric seats, a manual AC, central and child lock facilities, power steering, a tilt column, power windows, a rear wiper and defogger, an engine immobiliser and internally operated body coloured ORVMs with turn indicators are the standard features inside. Higher variants have Bluetooth connectivity for telephony, steering mounted audio controls, 2 airbags, ABS, EBD and fog lamps additionally.
The 1.2G petrol variant has an engine with 1197 cc volume, 79 bhp and 173 NM torque giving a mileage of 17.71 kmpl and 1.5V variant an engine with 1496 cc volume, 89 bhp and 132 NM torque giving a mileage of 16.78 kmpl .The diesel versions are powered by a 1364 cc, 67 bhp, 170 NM torque engine with a fuel efficiency of 23.59 kmpl.
The physical dimensions of the Etios Cross are 3895 mm length, 1735 mm width, 1555 mm height, 174 mm ground clearance and 2460 mm wheel base. The suspension is McPherson type at the front and Torsion beam type at the rear.
The Etios Cross will face competition from the likes of the Volkswagen Cross Polo, the Ford EcoSport and the Fiat Avventura.
